Plenty of runners and cyclists now ask an AI chatbot to coach them. We did it for months, pasting screenshots every morning. It worked better than we expected, right up to the point where it didn’t.
What works
A good chatbot knows the training science. Ask for a 12-week plan and you get a sensible one; ask why a session is there and it explains. Say you slept badly and it adjusts.
Where it breaks
- It forgets. A new chat starts from zero, and a long one slowly loses its beginning.
- You are the data cable. A screenshot every morning, numbers copied from every ride. Skip a day and it never knows.
- There’s no calendar. The plan lives in a scroll of messages, and you can’t see what changed.
- It waits for you. A late sync or a 4th bad night in a row: it never sees them unless you notice first.
- It can’t check itself. Ask what it told you 2 weeks ago and it can only guess.
ownathlete is the coach you were trying to build
Nothing to paste. Your watch, ring or strap sends your sleep, HRV, resting heart rate and every session on its own.
A real calendar. At least 21 days ahead, every day written out, and every day keeps what you were asked beside what you did.
It never waits. The moment anything arrives, a ride, a missed day, a bad night or a message, your coach looks at the whole plan again.
It remembers you. Your coach keeps what it learns about you, so it notices that you rode through the last 4 rest days, or that when you say the numbers are lying, you’re usually right.
And you still talk to it
Ask why, push back, set hard lines, as much as you like. Try ownathlete free for 14 days, and bring your history: a Strava or TrainingPeaks export, or your watch’s past sessions, is read on the first day.
